Precautions After Eye Surgery

Cleansing, Showering, and Makeup
Hair washing and showering are possible from the day after surgery, but you must be careful not to get water on the wound. Be cautious as accumulated blood may come out if you strain your eyes. Eye makeup and contact lens wear are possible after 4 weeks. To prevent the double eyelid from loosening or changing shape, avoid eye makeup for one month, and contact lenses that can irritate the conjunctiva can be worn after one month.

Postoperative Progress
Conjunctival swelling or redness may occur after surgery. Postoperative conjunctival swelling (symptom where the conjunctiva appears white and puffy) or redness may develop. These symptoms are naturally absorbed over 2-4 weeks and are normal postoperative symptoms, so there is no need to worry. Additionally, temporary excessive tearing and eye discharge are normal postoperative responses that improve over time.

Swelling Management
Swelling decreases over 3-6 months after surgery. It is normal for swelling to appear asymmetrically as one side swells differently or reduces differently. Until the swelling completely subsides, the visible asymmetric swelling will improve over time. Apply hot/cold compress at appropriate times after surgery. Cold compress is recommended for the first 3 days after surgery when facial swelling occurs. It has the effect of preventing bleeding and reducing swelling. From day 4 onwards after surgery, warm compress is recommended for effective swelling and bruise management.

Wound Care
Manage with eye ointment and eye drops. Apply eye ointment thinly to the surgical area using a clean cotton swab in the morning and evening. If you have been prescribed eye drops, apply them to the conjunctiva 2-3 times a day. Small white milia (about the size of millet) may develop on the incision line after surgery, but they will naturally disappear over time. However, if they do not disappear after 3 months, simple removal is possible after visiting the clinic depending on the condition.

Alcohol and Smoking
Avoid alcohol and smoking for 1 month after surgery. Alcohol and smoking negatively affect bleeding, wound healing, and infection, so it is recommended to abstain from them for 1 month after surgery.

Sleep Position
Check your sleeping position for 3 months after surgery. For the first week after surgery, ensure your neck is not bent while sleeping, and maintain your upper body elevated with your head higher than your heart, which helps reduce swelling quickly. Also, do not sleep on your side or stomach; sleep facing the ceiling.
