Eye Surgery: Understanding Individual Characteristics Matters More Than Chasing Trends

When school break season arrives, plastic surgery clinics are among the places that see a surge in patients. Students who have finished the college entrance exam, job seekers about to graduate, and many others come to improve their insecurities or change their image.

There are many areas of plastic surgery, but the most popular one, with the highest demand and interest, is double eyelid surgery. Eyes with double eyelids can give a relatively clear and bright impression.

There are various types of double eyelid surgery, broadly divided into incisional, non-incisional (buried suture), ptosis correction, and blepharoptosis correction. The incisional method, as the name suggests, creates the double eyelid line directly by incising the skin of the upper eyelid, producing well-defined eyes. The buried suture method creates a double eyelid by binding the skin and muscle together with a needle and thread. Because the surgery is performed through small openings in the eyelid without an incision, it leaves no scar and allows for quick recovery.

Ptosis correction is a surgery that corrects ptosis, a condition in which the eyelid droops due to insufficient muscle strength, giving the eyes a 'sleepy' appearance. Ptosis correction is performed after checking the degree of eyelid drooping, vision, eye movement, and the function of the muscle that lifts the eyelid. If some function of the lifting muscle remains, part of the muscle can be resected to raise the eyelid; if not, the eyelid is connected to the forehead muscle so that the eye can be opened using the forehead.

Recently, many patients have also been opting for the Dual-Lock buried suture method, which uses a special double-stranded thread. Unlike the conventional buried method, which uses a single thread, the Dual-Lock method passes a special double-stranded thread through twice before tying the knot, increasing the strength with which the double eyelid points are fixed. This makes the double eyelid line more distinct and helps keep the line from loosening.

In addition, because the strength of the sturdy special thread works effectively even on thick skin, the range of candidates for the surgery is wide. Above all, makeup, face washing, and contact lenses are possible immediately after surgery, and because the sutures are fixed inside the eyelid, there is no scarring or swelling, making it a favorite among students and office workers.

Specialists note that each type of double eyelid surgery has different advantages and disadvantages, and that each individual's skin, double eyelid line, impression, and balance differ, so the most appropriate method should be chosen through consultation.

Dr. Song-yi Park of NANA Plastic Surgery said, "With conventional double eyelid surgery, only one thread is used, so there were cases where the double eyelid loosened after surgery and revision was needed. The Dual-Lock natural adhesion method ties the skin and the levator muscle with two threads, reducing concerns about loosening, and because the surgery follows each individual's natural skin crease line, it produces the most natural and distinct line."

She added, "With the recent break season, many students bring photos of celebrities and ask for the same look. But plastic surgery is not a mechanical process of stamping out identical features; the most appropriate double eyelid line must be determined by considering the overall harmony with the individual's face shape, eyebrows, forehead, and nose. Satisfaction can only be achieved by identifying these characteristics through consultation and examination with medical staff, followed by safe surgery."
