[Expert Column] For Safe Lip Fillers, Using 'Genuine Products' in the 'Right Amount' Is Key

Like 'COVID-19', which swept across the world, there is something with such powerful contagiousness that it spreads to those around you without your even realizing it: your 'facial expression'. Everyone has probably experienced how seeing someone smile brightly makes you smile too and lifts your mood, as if infected by a happiness virus, while being with someone cold and expressionless makes you feel uncomfortable and tense.

Because facial expression is such an important factor in relationships, determining how likeable a person seems, many people visit clinics to improve an unsatisfactory expression or impression. Recently, with the lifting of the outdoor mask mandate, inquiries about lip procedures in particular have risen sharply.

Thin lips or downturned mouth corners can make a person look gloomy or depressed, and asymmetrical lips are easily mistaken for a sneering expression. These days, the so-called 'smile line'—a defined lip line, moderate volume, and slightly upturned mouth corners that make one look as if smiling—is considered the standard for a pretty mouth, as it gives a positive, bright impression. For mouth-shape correction, filler treatment has emerged as the most popular method, as the procedure is relatively simple, the recovery period is short, and the effect is immediate.

The most common filler procedures for mouth-shape correction are lip fillers and mouth-corner fillers. Lip fillers fill the lips themselves to create a voluminous, three-dimensional lip shape, while mouth-corner fillers inject filler around the lips or the corners of the mouth to lift the direction of the corners. Such filler procedures not only improve facial expression but also make the facial features look more defined.

One thing to note is that the lips, made up of thin mucous membrane with many blood vessels, are an area with a lot of movement, so it is important to establish a treatment plan that fits you exactly through a thorough consultation with experienced medical staff before the procedure.

First, after receiving filler, you should avoid eating hot food for at least two hours, and for the two weeks during which the filler settles, it is best not to irritate the lips, for example by using a straw or biting the lips.

Which filler product you choose is also important. Fillers with proven safety should be used to prevent side effects. It is therefore essential to first check whether the product's safety has been proven through clinical research, such as approval from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

Merz's 'Belotero', a product widely used recently, is subdivided so it can be tailored to the shape of the wrinkle, giving it excellent skin integration. Its advantage is that after the procedure, it provides a good feel and volume without any sense of foreignness in the lips.

If you are afraid of taking off your mask because of an unsatisfactory lip shape or mouth line, why not find a safe and effective method and confidently take the step before the midsummer heat arrives?
