No matter how well-defined the facial features, protruding cheekbones, an angular square jaw, or asymmetrical facial bones tend to overshadow even pretty features.

Recently, the number of patients interested in facial contouring surgery has been growing, and information on the various facial contouring procedures is attracting attention.

However, board-certified plastic surgeons advise that it is risky to decide on facial contouring surgery based solely on cost or promotional information. In particular, in areas such as Gangnam, Seoul, where plastic surgery clinics are concentrated, cases of indiscriminate surgery driven by excessive marketing disguised as promotions are increasing, and more careful choices are required.

Facial contouring surgery can be broadly divided into square jaw, cheekbone, and chin surgery, and the surgical area and method vary depending on the individual's condition. Depending on the individual, additional procedures such as masseter reduction, cortical osteotomy, and deep cheek fat removal may be performed at the same time. However, insisting on a small face or a sharp V-line at all costs can lead to revision surgery later, so excessive ambition should be avoided.

Dr. Hyung-jun Kim of NANA Plastic Surgery in Gangnam said that for an accurate diagnosis leading to safe facial contouring surgery, the current condition must be assessed through pre-surgical examinations such as 3D-CT and X-ray, and that measuring the thickness of the facial bones, the thickness of the muscles, and the amount of fat allows for a more detailed facial contouring plan. He also advised that for safe surgery, patients must check whether an anesthesiologist is on site at the clinic before surgery, since facial contouring is performed under general anesthesia and the anesthesiologist's role is extremely important, and that a pre-surgical examination to check one's current physical condition is essential before general anesthesia.

He added that while a wide range of information is available online as demand for facial contouring surgery grows, the most important thing is a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, and that for satisfactory results it is advisable to listen to expert opinions, compare carefully, and undergo safe and effective surgery.
