[Segye Biz = Reporter Hye-sun Park] Celebrities on TV cannot help but pay close attention to how their appearance and image come across on screen. As screen resolution and pixel counts have improved compared to the past, wrinkles and blood vessels that would not normally be visible show up clearly.
Wrinkles and fat layers that develop with age can make a person look older than they are, and in severe cases can give the complexion a sickly appearance. In particular, under-eye fat that bulges and accumulates creates dull dark circles, giving a gloomy, dark impression.
One surgery that can improve this cosmetic concern is 'under-eye fat repositioning.' Under-eye fat accumulates when the septum surrounding the fat layer that cushions the eyeball weakens due to aging or heredity. The accumulated fat sags downward and pushes out the skin beneath the eyes, creating bulging fat bags and tear troughs.
Under-eye fat repositioning is a surgery that improves the tired, dark look caused by protruding under-eye fat. After removing fat through the conjunctiva, it is repositioned to create a smooth surface, which can improve dark circles. Medical staff say it helps preserve the aegyo-sal (the plump area just beneath the eyes), makes the under-eye area look lively, and contributes to a youthful appearance.
Depending on the condition of the eyes and skin, the surgical method can be either an incision through the conjunctiva inside the eye or an incision just beneath the lower lashes. According to medical staff, the surgery and recovery do not take a relatively long time, and the burden of pain or side effects is not significant.
Under-eye fat repositioning must be performed with consideration of various factors, including age, the amount of fat, the degree of skin elasticity, the condition of the under-eye bone structure and muscles, and the distribution of fat and blood vessels. Because the causes of under-eye aging and the post-surgical prognosis can differ from person to person, customized surgery is necessary.
Dr. Seung-jeh Lee of NANA Plastic Surgery said, "Tear troughs or bags caused by under-eye fat look like dark circles, and the symptoms can worsen in winter as exposure to sunlight decreases. Under-eye fat repositioning can improve dark circles, uneven areas around the eyes, and sagging or sunken areas by repositioning the sagging under-eye fat."
He added, "The key to under-eye fat repositioning is not just removing fat but repositioning it. Because the surgery must reduce bulging fat while filling sunken areas, making use of the existing fat is essential. In particular, since the under-eye area has thin skin and many structures that affect eye function, a careful surgical plan should be established with medical staff who have delicate skill and extensive know-how."
