Alar Reduction in Rhinoplasty Calls for a Harmonious, Three-Dimensional Design
NANA Plastic Surgery Views:1925

The nose, at the center of the face, is a key element that determines overall balance and harmony, and interest in improving it has surged recently. In particular, wide or large nostrils can make the face look relatively spread out, and more and more people are considering alar reduction surgery to relieve the stress this causes.

Conventional alar reduction was typically performed by excising skin at the base of the nose and then bringing the nostrils together with sutures. However, this method alone can lead to side effects over time, such as collapse of the nostrils or depression at the sutured area. To prevent this, the triangular flap technique is now commonly applied.

The triangular flap technique inserts a triangle-shaped flap into the incision site to prevent structural deformation of the nose. This helps prevent the nostrils from becoming asymmetrical or depressed, and maintains a more natural and ideal nose line.

Rhinoplasty that includes alar reduction is not simply about making the nostrils smaller; a harmonious design tailored to each individual's face is essential. To this end, 3D-CT imaging is used to precisely analyze the condition, size, shape, and any asymmetry of the nasal bones, septal cartilage, and skin tissue. Through this process, a safer and more effective customized surgical plan can be established.

Because the size and shape of the columella (the part connecting the bridge and the tip of the nose) and the nostrils differ according to each person's facial structure, it is more important to consider overall proportions than simply to reduce size. When surgery is performed after finding the ideal proportions for the patient's face, more satisfying results can be achieved and a natural, three-dimensional nose shape can be completed.

When considering alar reduction together with rhinoplasty, it is important not to focus solely on reducing size but to apply a design that harmonizes with the individual's facial shape. Functional aspects must also be closely examined before surgery to prevent side effects. Rhinoplasty performed on the basis of precise analysis and a customized surgical plan can be expected to deliver a more beautiful and harmonious nose shape.
