Ptosis is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops downward because the muscle that opens the eye has weakened due to congenital or acquired causes. People with ptosis often hear that they 'look sleepy' even when their eyes are open as comfortably as usual.
If the eyelids cover a significant portion of the pupils, as if the eyes were only half-open in a drowsy state, or if you have a habit of raising your eyebrows with your forehead to open your eyes, ptosis should be suspected. It is normal for about 80–90% of the iris to be visible when the eyes are opened naturally, but if the iris is half covered or the eye-opening strength is asymmetrical, ptosis is highly likely.
When the eyelids droop and cover the pupils due to ptosis, the field of vision is obstructed, which can lead to reduced eyesight. In addition, if the habit of opening the eyes using the forehead muscles rather than the eye muscles continues, it can cause deep wrinkles and even headaches, so correction is needed.
One method of correcting ptosis is natural adhesion ptosis correction. As the name suggests, ptosis correction adjusts the strength of the muscle that opens the eye to expand the exposure of the iris and allow the eyes to open comfortably.
Natural adhesion ptosis correction is a surgery that naturally makes the eyes look more defined without incising the skin or conjunctiva, while at the same time strengthening the muscle that opens the eye. The muscle is shortened through a small opening along the double eyelid line, thereby strengthening its power. Because no incision is made, there is less swelling and recovery is relatively quick.
Caution is needed here, however: if the focus is placed on enlarging the eyes in order to expose the iris, the result may be overcorrection or undercorrection after surgery. Depending on the individual, double adhesion ptosis correction or incisional ptosis correction may be more suitable than the natural adhesion method.
Dr. Song-yi Park of NANA Plastic Surgery said, "If only about 2 mm or less is exposed from the center of the pupil when the eyes are opened naturally, ptosis correction may be necessary. Natural adhesion ptosis correction is a way to change a sleepy or timid-looking impression, and since there is no incision, it can reduce the burden on patients in terms of recovery and pain."
Dr. Park added, "Because eye surgery can affect not only cosmetic aspects but also function, the process of analyzing the patient's skin thickness, the degree of ptosis, the amount of fat in the eyelid, and the desired eye shape is important. Patients should therefore consider the skill and surgical experience of the medical staff before surgery and check whether the clinic offers systematic consultation and accurate examinations."
