NANA's guide to
precautions after nose surgery
01
Washing, Showering & Makeup
You may resume washing your face and wearing makeup starting the day after the stitches on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) are removed.Until the nasal splint and tape are removed, gently clean the areas around the surgical site with a damp washcloth, avoiding direct contact with the nose.
You may resume washing your face and wearing makeup starting the day after the stitches on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) are removed. When washing your face, avoid rubbing or applying pressure to your nose.
We recommend avoiding glasses, saunas, and steam rooms for at least one month after surgery, unless otherwise advised by your surgeon.02
Recovery
Mild bleeding and nasal discharge may occur during the first 2–3 days after surgery.Avoid blowing your nose for the first month after surgery. After one month, you may gently blow your nose, taking care not to apply excessive pressure.
If ear cartilage was used during surgery, discomfort or changes in sensation at the cartilage harvesting site may persist for up to 6 months. If ear cartilage was used during surgery, you may feel pain or changes in sensation when touching the area for up to 6 months. In general, pain and altered sensation improve over time, so there is no need to worry.
03
Swelling care
Facial swelling may persist for approximately one month after surgery. It is normal for swelling to appear uneven after rhinoplasty, as each side of the nose may swell and heal at a different rate. Any visible asymmetry caused by swelling should gradually improve as the swelling subsides.
Use cold and warm compresses at the recommended times after surgery to help manage swelling and bruising.Cold compresses are recommended for the first 3 days after surgery to help reduce swelling and minimize the risk of bleeding. Starting on day 4, warm compresses may help improve circulation and gradually reduce swelling and bruising.
04
Wound care
Please return to the clinic for scheduled dressing changes, as well as splint and stitch removal. If nasal packing was placed inside your nose or gauze was applied behind your ear following ear cartilage harvesting, please return to the clinic 2–3 days after surgery for removal and wound cleaning.
The nasal splint and stitches are typically removed during a follow-up appointment 6–7 days after surgery.Apply the prescribed ointment to the surgical area as directed by your surgeon.Twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, gently clean the inside of your nostrils and the incision line using a cotton swab moistened with saline solution. After cleaning, apply a thin layer of the prescribed ointment as directed by your surgeon.
05
Alcohol & Smoking
Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking for at least one month after surgery to support proper healing and recovery.Alcohol consumption and smoking can increase the risk of bleeding, delay wound healing, and raise the risk of infection. For these reasons, we recommend avoiding both for at least one month after surgery.
06
Sleeping Position
Please follow the recommended sleeping position guidelines for the first 3 months after surgery. For the first week after surgery, sleep on your back with your head and upper body slightly elevated above heart level to help reduce swelling. Avoid bending your neck excessively or sleeping on your side or stomach during this period.
