What is the platysma muscle

in Platysmaplasty?

The platysma is a thin sheet-like muscle layer located just below the
skin of the neck and chin. It extends downward from the collarbone,
crossing over the neck to the chest (pectoral) and triangular
(shoulder muscle) muscles before reaching the neck. As one ages,
the muscle fibers separate, appearing as two distinct muscles.
Over time, the fibers that connect and support the muscles weaken,
causing the muscles to sag downward.

Q&A

  • Q What is Platysmaplasty and what does the procedure improve?
A Platysmaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to tighten and repair the platysma muscle, the thin muscle layer that runs along the front of the neck. With aging, this muscle can separate and create visible vertical neck bands or sagging in the neck area. Platysmaplasty restores a smoother and firmer neck contour by tightening the underlying muscle structure, improving the appearance of neck bands and enhancing jawline definition.
  • Q How is Platysmaplasty different from a Neck Lift?
A While a neck lift surgery typically focuses on removing excess skin and fat from the neck, platysmaplasty specifically addresses the underlying platysma muscle laxity that causes vertical neck bands. By tightening and repositioning the platysma muscle, the procedure improves structural support in the neck. In many cases, platysmaplasty is performed together with a neck lift or facelift surgery to achieve more comprehensive neck rejuvenation.
  • Q Who is a good candidate for Platysmaplasty?
A Ideal candidates for platysmaplasty surgery are patients who notice visible vertical neck bands, muscle separation, or loss of definition in the neck and jawline. The procedure is commonly recommended for individuals experiencing moderate to advanced neck aging where muscle laxity is the main concern. By restoring tension to the platysma muscle, platysmaplasty can create a smoother neck profile and a more defined lower facial contour.
